Preparing for
your MRI
Most people need very little preparation. Here’s what helps your visit go smoothly.
Tell us before your scan if you have:
• A pacemaker or defibrillator
• A cochlear implant
• Brain aneurysm clips
• A nerve stimulator or implanted pump
• Metal fragments in your body, especially near your eyes (for example from welding or metalwork)
• Joint replacements, plates, screws or recent surgery
• Medication patches
• Tattoos or permanent makeup
• A pregnancy, or a chance you may be pregnant
Many implants are safe for MRI. Your technologist reviews your answers with you before your scan. If you have an implant card, bring it.
What to wear
Loose, comfortable clothes without metal: no zippers, snaps or underwire.
Leave jewelry, watches and hair clips at home.
We may give you a gown.
What to bring
Your referral from your doctor
A photo ID
Your insurance or claim information, if you have it
Any implant cards
During the scan
The scanner knocks loudly. We give you earplugs or headphones.
The room is cool; ask for a blanket.
You can talk to your technologist the whole time.
If tight spaces worry you
Tell us when you call. Our Miami Gardens center has an open MRI that’s open on the sides. At Plantation, the bore is short and wide, and for many hip, knee and ankle scans your head stays outside the magnet. If you think you’ll need help relaxing, talk to your doctor before your appointment.
For larger patients
The open MRI table at Miami Gardens holds up to 500 lb (225 kg). Call us and we’ll help you choose the right center.
